How Surfing Became Mainstream
Many surfers will already know that this now global sport originated from some of the smallest islands found in the Pacific Ocean. At the start there wasn’t any special equipment or big brands such as Roxy and Urban Clothing. It was not in people’s vision that the sport would ever grow to conquer the world. Because of advance in the type of equipment being used in the sport today people can now spend much longer in the water and have more control over their board thanks to innovative brands such as Quiksilver.
Many of the islands noted for their contribution to the creation of the sport lie along a line know as the ring of fire, which is a circle of volcanic islands formed in the Pacific Ocean formed by the coming together of the earth’s plates. But what many people don’t realise is that these tropical paradises are not exactly good for us. The climate is hot and humid whilst the islands are naturally surrounded by salt water which can dry your skin out.
This is why the wetsuit was invented because surfers were becoming frustrated by not being able to spend long in the water when temperatures drop. The wetsuit works by keeping the heat into your body but also lets you cool down in the water is hot, on top of this it will also protect you against the sun’s damaging rays. You can imagine that this was a huge benefit for anyone wanting to surf and especially those living in harsh climates. With the coming of the wetsuit surfing was now able to become a mainstream sport that was accessible to nearly everyone.
A wetsuit combined with some other protective gear also performs a barrier against yourself and other sea creatures that could potentially be dangerous. On top of this the development of surf boards into many different shapes and sizes made the sport enjoyable for people of all ages and skills. With longer boards being made for those individuals still learning the sport and smaller boards being more manoeuvrable and suitable for tricks.
